This poem is about an unscrupulous student who casts a line in hopes of getting an ignorant fish--a fish that will swallow a lure of bright and shiny points. The fisherman believes that by eating the brains of the fish, it too will gain the superior knowledge of the fish. In this manner, ignorance begets ignorance.
