How to treat a burst ear drum?

My 18 month old woke up from his nap really cranky, just would not stop crying no matter what I did. This is out of character for him. Finally he calmed down when I gave him a lollipop and sat down with him to watch some kid show. But like 20 minutes later he just screamed and grabbed his ear and cried and cried. I immediately thought he was cranky because he had an ear infection and it just burst. This has never happened to him before but I don't know why he'd cry out like that and grab his ear. No drainage. I gave him some ibuprofen and like 5 min. later (before the medicine would have started working) he was completely fine. Does this sound typical of a burst ear drum? He seems fine now, should I take him to the doctor? Is there anything they can do for a burst ear drum?
