What kind of dog to get?

My boyfriend is obsessed with dogs. He had one while growing up for 15 years and then it ped away and after that his parents would not get a new one. Anyway, he said that as soon as he can afford to buy his own house, he will move out and get a dog. The problem is that we are most likely going to live together, as we are pretty serious and planning on getting married in the future, but I am not a dog person. I don't hate dogs, it's just that growing up I was afraid of them and now I am not, but I was never the "awww what a cute dog" person. So, what I would like to know is what breed of dog you would recommend for someone who wants to become a dog person? My BF wants a big dog who will come and sit next to him while he watches tv and I don't want to have to clean up fur all the time! What would you recommend?
