Why is US politics and commentary so concerned with political partisanship?

Decreasing partisan politics has been a major theme in Presidential US politics for a while now and I cannot see why so much hot air is wasted on the issue. Will any good come out of this debate? What's the root cause of it? Does anyone, even in politics, think that they will magically change their ways?
