Maxtor 500 gb hard drive won't work?

I plug in the adaptor and connect it to my laptop's USB port, but the laptop won't recognise it. The green power on comes on, but the hard drive unit makes a short buzzing noise every 3 seconds. I think I may have mistakenly used the wrong power adaptor on it once, could this be the problem?
